On the eve of the new millennium, diamond thief Noel Snow seduced FBI special agent Robert Cuffe, then fled into the dawn. Now a successful novelist, Noel uses his capers as fodder for his books, and has modeled his hero's nemesis (and potential love interest) on Cuffe. Though he leaves Robert a drunken phone message every New Year's Eve, Noel hasn't seen or heard from him in a decade.
So he's thrilled when his former lover shows up at his upstate farm one Christmas Eve. Elation quickly turns to alarm when Robert accuses Noel of being responsible for a recent rash of diamond heists. Robert is all business and as cold as ice it seems his only interest in Noel is to put him behind bars.
Innocent of the crimes, and still as attracted as ever to the oh-so-serious lawman, Noel plans a second seductionproviding he can stay out of jail long enough!

One of Josh Lanyon's gems from the past, released in 2010 and now available on Kindle. This one gives us two mid-30s antagonists who are on opposite sides of the law in the first chapter, and 10 years later unable to forget that lone encounter. Nicely paced, totally obvious in how it will turn out, low key sexual tension until the real deal, and then it's a bit of a surprise, but otherwise a nice treacle.Product details

Icecapade edition by Josh Lanyon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This novella is a real gem! I totally loved this holiday story of retired cat burglar Noel Snow, whose quiet solitude at an upstate New York horse farm is interrupted when his former FBI nemesis (and one-time lover) comes knocking on his door to interrogate him about a rash of robberies.
Even though you may have a strong idea of how this story might end (being a Lanyon story and a holiday-themed one to boot), it still unspooled in ways that I hadn't suspected at all, and I was just as surprised as Noel at every new knock on his door. Sweet, funny, tender, and romantic, with the edge of fears and old regrets, but also the added bonus of maturity that a decade of time brings you. (I always appreciate when characters get straight to the point with each other.)
I was going to wait until closer to Christmas to read this, but I couldn't wait. But I think it will be a real pleasure to revisit (and revisit again.) Highly recommended, especially if you're already a fan of Lanyon's work.
Rating 4.5
A sweet and poignant M/M romance. Well-written, as expected, with excellent editing - it's always a pleasure reading Mr. Lanyon's books from that perspective alone. This short story/short novella takes place over Christmas, with flashbacks to ten years before. I'm not a huge holiday book fan, but the story isn't your run of the mill Christmas tale. Sweet yes, but not overly so.
MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW
Noel Snow (lol, love the name!) is a retired jewel thief who had a one-night stand (romance? - it was more than just a sexual encounter) with Robert Cuffe, an FBI agent who was investigating Noel. Ten years later, Noel is an author of crime novels that feature a detective more than vaguely reminiscent of Robert. His last novel in the series penned, Noel heads back to his country home for the holidays. There's a knock on the door and - voila - Robert is there, asking Noel questions about copycat burglaries.
Both Noel and Robert have, for years, thought about each other. Robert's life has been turned somewhat upside down with the publication of Noel's books - apparently the FBI isn't so thrilled with having one of its agents as the model for a fictional character. It certainly couldn't help, either, that Noel decided to out his hero in the last installment!
From the time Robert knocks on Noel's door, there is a long stream of visitors - neighbors mostly - seeking Noel's assistance with one thing or another. And during these "side stories" as I call them, Robert becomes privy to Noel's secret and the reason for his retirement from the cat-burglar business. The book ends with a sweet HEA, as expected.
The best part of the book was the characters. Noel bristles at Robert's accusations and Robert just, well, bristles! Their interactions are sweet, but masculine. No maudlin crying in sight, thank goodnesss (another reason I like Josh Lanyon's stories). A sweet, easy read.

My Review
I had never read anything from Josh Lanyon until I read Lone Star last week. I loved it so much, I had to look up his Christmas novella from last year's Carina m/m anthology. This is that novella and it was just as good as Lone Star was. I think that I am on my way to adding a new author to my auto-buy list. This novella was wonderful!
One of the things that Josh Lanyon does so well in his writing is present a relationship that has a huge dichotomy between the two heroes. In this book, the heroes are an FBI agent (Robert) and a former cat burglar (Noel.) They had one night of passion ten years ago when Robert was in the middle of trying to capture Noel. Since then, Noel has retired from his illegal activities and has written a series of very successful novels based loosely upon Robert and their antagonistic relationship as felon and investigator. But in the past ten years these two have had zero contact besides a single phone call each New Year's Eve that Noel makes to Robert's answering machine, so it is a complete surprise when Noel opens his door on Christmas Eve and finds Robert there.
This is a novella, but the entire thing is so rich with details and feelings. It totally reads like a full-length novel. I didn't feel short-changed in the depth of story at all. I became completely immersed in this romance between these two and definitely became emotionally invested in the outcome. I really liked both characters although the majority of the story is told from Noel's POV, so he is the one that you relate to the most. You all know that I love a good emotional book and Josh Lanyon definitely knows how to write emotional. This was really a gorgeous love story. Now I need to try some of his full-length novels (btw, it looks like he writes a lot of his heroes as writers...I love that!)
This captivating tale is about two very different men, one on the right side of the law and one who used to be on the wrong side. Slender Noel was a thief of expensive art and jewelry, and has worked hard to turn his life around and is legit now, as an author and horse breeder. Big, rough, Special Agent Robert is an investigator who has turned up on Noel's doorstep to question him. Years ago they had a good one night stand that rocked both their socks off and Robert severed contact. Now, Robert wants to see if their connection is still there, but uses a ruse of questioning Noel about some robberies. The quirky neighbors of Noel's come into play, the guys are talking, but Noel is skeptical. When the ruse comes to light, the guys seriously talk about the reconnection possibilities. Fascinating short story that will keep you intrigued. Great reuniting sex, an interesting tale, and terrific characters make this story a wonderful read ! ENJOY !!!
